Lake Travis Hands Georgetown Boys It's First Loss |
 |
|
March 9th, 2011
On Wednesday, Lake Travis upended Georgetown by a score of
7 – 5 in a well played Texas High School Lacrosse League game. With the
new pecking order announced on Tuesday, Lake Travis hung onto a spot,
ranked #10 in both the THL DII Power Rankings and THL DII Coaches Poll.
Georgetown, on the other hand, had been climbing the ladder by riding an
eight-game winning streak and capturing the #3 spot in both the THL DII
Power Rankings and THL DII Coaches Poll. However, on their home field, the
Eagles met their match and suffered their first loss of the season.
When a team gobbles ground balls, they dictate the pace of play. Lake
Travis was able to control possession by scooping up 44 ground balls
compared to Georgetown’s 26. Despite the shots on goal being equal
(Georgetown- 25 / Lake Travis- 24), the Cavaliers were able to find the
soft spots more frequently. Having a great night for Lake Travis, and
leading all scorers, was junior midfielder Talan Ceshker with four goals
and one assist. Senior attackman Andreas Soto ripped two goals and junior
attackman Doug McPhaul added a goal and two assists for the Cavaliers in
the victory.
Scott Conrad, head coach of Georgetown, has had tremendous success during
the 2nd year of the program- including a huge win to end Stony Point’s
22-game winning streak against DII opponents. By sufferring their first
loss of 2011, he’s taken an optimistic view and found areas to improve
upon. ”Lake Travis had a great game plan and played hard for 48 minutes
tonight,” said Conrad. ”They are a well-coached team who out-hustled us
and capitalized on their opportunities tonight while we did not. They
deserved the win and taught us some valuable lessons in the process that
will hopefully make us a better team in the second half of the season”.
Scoring for Georgetown was again led by senior midfielder Derek Sudderth
with one goal and two assists. Senior attackmen John Slater and Sloan
Childers contributed one goal and one assist each. Both teams played solid
defense. Georgetown managed to clear 85% (17 for 20) and Lake Travis
managed to clear 72% (13 for 18).

DII Coaches Preseason Poll
1. Hillcrest-
Led by Colgate bound senior attackman, Trevor
Atkins, and very strong goalie play, the Panthers are looking to claim the
throne left vacant by Coppell. After a strong showing against Dallas
Jesuit, this team showed it will be a force in DII.
2. McKinney-
This is a very balanced team led by a star attackman
in Jack McKane, a rock-wall goalie in Jacob Moran and strong, Mercer bound
defensemen in Josh Davidson. McKinney won the UT Tournament in the fall
and will look to continue that success in the spring.
3. Stony Point-
The returning Central District Champs will try to
reload after losing top scorer Schindel. They are well coached and have a
solid defense. We will see if the new Round Rock program has any effect by
splitting the talent.
4. Lake Travis-
After graduating only one starter the 2010 Central
District runner up looks to keep up its accelerated pace. Led by a
defense that has three senior starters, LT will be able to keep games
close against anybody and finish on top in most matchups.
5. Clear Lake-
Steamrolling through the schedule last year, the
team finished 2010 undefeated in District play and will return 15 players
with Varsity experience! With Houston Christian moving up to Division 1,
they are the early favorite to turn heads out of the South.
6. Highland Park DII-
You never know who will show up to play on a roster
that is constantly turning over. However, you do know Highland Park DII is
a premiere program in the state of Texas. Quality athletes and coaching
make this team a regular contender no matter what the roster says.
7. Keller-
Despite being new to DII, Keller will make an impact
immediately. Last year they dominated DIII and their only three losses
came against DII and DI teams. They seem to be well balanced with impact
players at all positions.
8. Cy-Fair-
Cy-Fiar is yet another strong South team that fell
at the hands of Houston Christian last year. The Ironmen will play tough
games against Lamar and Episcopal Houston to ready themselves for a April
1st matchup against Clear Lake.
9. McNeil-
McNeil is another team new to DII, but this one
moved down from DI. The Mavs will rely on Mack Starnes and Kiel Galvin to
provide them with the leadership they need to compete in the DII Central
District.
10. Georgetown-
One of the newest programs in the state made a
splash in 2010 by making the Central District playoffs in their inaugural
year. Well coached by Scott Conrad this team plays very solid defense.

Bend, Plano East, Fort Worth and Vandergrift
